What are active components and what are passive components.
What is a resistor? Wire wound and carbon! What's the difference and why it is important.
Passive components:
What is a capacitor? Used for filters. Passes AC.
What is an inductor? Winding of wire/coil - air/iron - would pass DC.
Capacitor/inductor - band pass circuit. Or filter out a frequency.
What is a diode? Allows current in one direction. A rectifier.
Active Components:
What is a transistor? Semi-conductor material. NPN/NPN types. Controlled by the Base of the transistor. How to check a transistor if it is good (or not).
What is an SCR? Once turned on it cannot be turned off. Good for controlling large amounts of power. Acts as a switch. Like a mechanical relay.
Electromechanical Relay: Electromagnet that pulls a switch open or closed. Also used in antenna relays. Latching relays, to switch components in and out.
Integrated Circuit: Circuits miniature
Op-Amps: A popular IC used to amplify signals and used in our radios.
Tips: Bad microphone connectors/cables.

73 Round: W9VE had the following comments: Crowbar circuits use a SCR to prevent the power supply from shorting out using a "crowbar circuit". Relays - were people who would pass a message from person to person. It was used in the first telegraphs. After 100 to 200 miles the signal would be too weak. The would use an electromagnet to operate a switch, to strengthen the signal and restart a clean signal.
